Here we are ! The very first version is available for download. Only few features are working. The pupose is to make you understand the power of this idea. PLease take a look and feel free to give feedback.

Some refactoring is already planned.

A new report console is a included, then you're able to see if your report is deployed.

Soon, we will provide some usage examples in the wiki.

Already in the wiki, there's a description on how to install a dev environment for this project. Available here.

Why this project ?

Posted on 2005-07-28 05:44:16.0 by Reporting Services Team [ View original post ]

Why this project ?

In several projects where I was involved, we always needed to prepare some well defined reports. Users will then request for them, providing some parameters. These reports are often the most valuable part of applications. However, integrating reports into applications isn't always that easy. Today several commercial products are providing a whole set of features that is exactly what I'm talking about.

In the open source field, several engines/designers (and very good ones) are available. But it's not enough. We need some scheduling features along with several distribution options as sending reports result by mail or by ftp to a web site folder.

Moreover, this reporting services should be in the J2EE (JEE) spec. So, this project will try to mimic what already exists in the J2EE (JEE) land. This is the xxx.era way of deploying a set of reports with metadata. ERA stands for Enterprise Reports Archive.

This project will allow to deploy reports from several engines (at first JasperReports and JFreeReport) into JBossAS. This is the opposite of the trend where solutions provide this services on several application servers but for one report engine. In the ERA module, you will be able to mix reports from any of supported report engines.
